Course Description

Certificate IV in Dental Assisting provides the knowledge and skills necessary to provide an advanced level of chair-side assistance to the operator, including contributing to the quality of dental care provided through well developed communication skills; providing an oral health education program that promotes good oral health as part of general good health; as well as implementing and monitoring infection control policy and procedures.

This qualification allows the dental assistant to select electives that are specific to workplace needs or will assist in developing skills/knowledge to advance career development opportunities within the dental industry.

Course Core Units (Units of Competency)

• Implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures
• Contribute to OHS processes
• Communicate with clients and colleagues to support health care

Elective Units (Choose four units, however if choosing the dental radiography stream all radiography units must be selected plus one elective)

• Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection in dental practice
• Prepare to expose a prescribed dental radiographic image
• Produce a dental radiographic image
• Implement an individualized oral hygiene programme
• Implement an individualized oral hygiene programme
• Implement an oral hygiene programme for older people
• Implement an oral health promotion programme
• Assist in oral health care procedures during general anaethesia
• Assist in oral health care procedures during conscious sedatio
• Manage patient record keeping system
• Assist with dental administration

For students wishing to enrol in Certificate IV in Dental Assisting HLT43007, it is a pre-requisite of entry that the Student must hold the qualification Certificate III in Dental Assisting HLT31807 (or equivalent) or be able to obtain recognised prior learning for the following units:

• Communicate and work effectively in health
• Comply within infection control polices and procedures in health work
• Process reusable instruments and equipment in health work
• Participate in OHS processes
• Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures
• Assist with dental radiography
• Assist with administration in dental practice
• Apply First Aid

Delivery of Course

We understand that no two students are the same so at Indigo Medical & Dental Training, we give students freedom of choice as to how they would like their training to be delivered i.e. as much or as little face to face interaction they would like from the Trainer.

• Flexible delivery (delivered flexibly but unlimited phone and email support)

• Flexible delivery (delivered flexibly, unlimited phone/email support and monthly face to face visits from the Trainer)

Many Registered Training Organisations offer large class delivery with high trainer to student ratios resulting in the student receiving very little direct attention. We have found that students who succeed most are those who have a recourse to call on at all times, and who are kept motivated and directed by an experienced, positive facilitator role model.
